Description of the online Rotor Blade Monitoring System


BLADEcontrol® bases on the physical phenomenon
of natural oscillation. Think of a wine glass: Once
stimulated, you hear a tone. The frequency of this tone
changes whenever a change occurs to the glass, e. g.
when liquid is added or the glass cracks. The rotor blade
is an elastic body, too. It oscillated with its natural frequencies when stimulated. The frequencies of any blade are of a unique pattern like a finger print in the range up to approx. 350 Hz. BLADEcontrol® measures the frequency spectra.
To measure, multi-dimensional, piezo-electric acceleration sensors are bonded directly into the rotor blades.
The measurement unit located in the hub of the wind turbine, the HMU, does the AD-transformation of the sensor signal and transfers them via wireless LAN from the hub into the nacelle, and from there to the tower foot via cable, if necessary.















Here the evaluation and communication unit (ECU) assesses the current state of the rotor blades by comparing the actual spectra with stored spectra gleaned from a variety of commonly-recognized disturbance conditions. The measurement and analysis data are stored on a data base server (DBS) at IGUS ITS GmbH. The conditions of the rotor blades can be displayed at any time using a web browser. A special visualization software is not needed.
